Attendance points cost me my grade — what do I need now?

The deduction already sits inside your current percentage, so the exam arithmetic is unchanged: 77% with a final worth 25% needs an 89 for a B-minus. What is worth changing is the deduction itself. Two syllabus policies exist, and the same five absences can cost 1.79 points under one and 4 under the other.

Common plus/minus convention; many schools use straight letters or different cut points.

You need 89% on the final.

That is within reach — the final is worth 25% of your grade.

  1. Work graded so far covers 75% of the course; 25% is still to come.
  2. Points already banked: 77% × 75% = 57.75 points of the 100 available.
  3. To finish at 80% you still need 22.25 points from the remaining 25%.
  4. 22.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 89% on what is left.

What you need, at every current grade

With a final worth 25% of your course grade and a B- (80%) as the goal, this is the score you need on the final from each starting point:

Frequently asked questions

How are attendance penalties usually applied?

Either attendance is a graded category — say 10% of the course, earned in proportion to sessions attended — or the syllabus deducts a fixed amount per absence after an allowance. Across 28 sessions with five missed, the first costs 1.79 points and the second, at two points each after three free, costs four.

Should I query the deduction?

If the count looks wrong, yes, and quickly. The common errors are documented absences never recoded as excused, a sign-in sheet missed while present, and a late arrival logged as a full absence. Bring dates and any paperwork; correcting the attendance record is an administrative fix rather than a request for leniency.

Do excused absences still cost points?

Under most policies they do not, but the exemption is rarely automatic — it needs documentation reaching the right person inside a stated window. Institutional grounds such as illness, athletics, jury duty or religious observance are usually recognised in a university-wide policy that overrides an individual syllabus.

How many more classes can I miss?

Compute it rather than guess, because some syllabi carry a hard ceiling — a stated number of absences that fails the course outright regardless of the average. The attendance calculator projects your grade for a given number of further absences; that ceiling is a separate clause and no calculator can see it.
