The honest answer is a number, not a feeling. From 84% with a final worth a quarter of the course, an A needs 108 — it is gone, and knowing that now is worth more than hoping. The table shows precisely where the boundary between reachable and not sits.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know for certain whether an A is still possible?
Compare your best possible finish against 90. Your ceiling is your current grade times the portion already graded, plus the full weight of the final. If that total falls below 90, no exam score can get you there, and the calculator states it plainly.
What is the cutoff for me?
It moves with the weight of your final. With a 25% final you need roughly 86.7 going in; with a 40% final, about 83.3; with a 15% final, about 88.2. Heavier finals leave more room, which is why the same current grade can be safe in one course and hopeless in another.
Is it worth asking about extra credit?
It costs nothing to ask, and it is the only lever that changes your current grade rather than your exam score. Ask early and specifically — a general request in the final week rarely lands, while asking about a stated policy is a normal question.
What should I aim for once the A is gone?
The next boundary down, deliberately rather than by default. Work out what an A-minus or B-plus needs, then study to clear it with margin. Grades are lost far more often by chasing an unreachable target than by aiming at a reachable one.
