Frequently asked questions
How much is a dropped score actually worth?
The lift equals the distance between the old category average and the new one, multiplied by that category's weight. Dropping a genuine outlier is worth several points; dropping a 74 from a set of 82, 80, 78 and 74 raises the average by only 1.5, which is 0.6 points of course grade at 40%.
Has the drop already been applied to my displayed grade?
Often not. Many instructors apply the rule by hand at the end of term, so the gradebook still shows every score and the number you have been reading is lower than your true standing. Ask, or recompute the category yourself without the lowest result and compare it against what the system displays.
Can the final be the dropped score?
Rarely. Drop rules almost always apply to a named category — unit tests or quizzes — and exclude the final, which usually sits in a category of its own. Some courses do the reverse and let a strong final replace a weak test, which is a far larger effect and worth checking for by name.
What else should I check before accepting the number?
Whether an excused absence was recorded as a zero rather than exempt, since a zero enters the average and consumes the drop a real low score would have used. Also check that a make-up score replaced the original rather than being added alongside it, which quietly halves the benefit.
