My final is worth 45% — what score do I need?
Nearly half your grade is still unwritten, which is generous if you are behind and frightening if you are not. From 68% a C at 73 needs a 79.1, comfortably within reach — while the identical exam could finish you at 37 if it collapses. Six starting grades and the scores they demand are set out below.
Common plus/minus convention; many schools use straight letters or different cut points.
You need 79.1% on the final.
That is within reach — the final is worth 45% of your grade.
🔢 Show the math
- Work graded so far covers 55% of the course; 45% is still to come.
- Points already banked: 68% × 55% = 37.4 points of the 100 available.
- To finish at 73% you still need 35.6 points from the remaining 45%.
- 35.6 ÷ 45 × 100 = 79.11% on what is left.
What you need, at every current grade

| 82% | 62.0% | Yes |
| 76% | 69.3% | Yes |

Frequently asked questions
How much does this final swing my grade?
Your possible finishes run from 37.4 to 82.4, a spread of forty-five points. Moving from a 60 to a 90 on the paper is worth 13.5 points of course grade, which crosses three or four letters. Very few single afternoons in a degree carry that much arithmetic weight.
Does a heavy final help me or threaten me?
Whichever side of your target you are standing on. At 68 aiming for 73 the weight is doing you a favour, because it dilutes an average you want diluted. A classmate at 80 aiming for the same C is protected by nothing, and one bad paper takes considerably more from them than from you.
Why would a course weight the final this heavily?
Usually because it is the only assessment covering the whole syllabus, which is common in mathematics, languages, and law. Coursework in those subjects tends to be practice rather than measurement, and the weighting is a statement about what the course claims to test rather than a trap laid for students.
How do I stop one bad day from deciding everything?
You cannot remove the variance, but you can shrink it. Sitting timed practice papers converts unfamiliarity into routine, and knowing the paper's structure means an unexpected first question costs a few minutes rather than the sitting. Sleep the night before does more for a long exam than a final review session.
