My final is worth 50% — what do I need?
When the exam carries half the course, your existing grade counts for exactly as much as one sitting. From 72%, a B-minus needs an 88 — and the same exam could just as easily drop you to 36 if it goes badly. Half-weight finals are the highest-variance situation in grading.
Common plus/minus convention; many schools use straight letters or different cut points.
You need 88% on the final.
That is within reach — the final is worth 50% of your grade.
🔢 Show the math
- Work graded so far covers 50% of the course; 50% is still to come.
- Points already banked: 72% × 50% = 36 points of the 100 available.
- To finish at 80% you still need 44 points from the remaining 50%.
- 44 ÷ 50 × 100 = 88% on what is left.
What you need, at every current grade
With a final worth 50% of your course grade and a B- (80%) as the goal, this is the score you need on the final from each starting point:
| Current grade | You need on the final | Reachable? |
|---|---|---|
| 85% | 75.0% | Yes |
| 80% | 80.0% | Yes |
| 76% | 84.0% | Yes |
| 72% | 88.0% | Yes |
| 66% | 94.0% | Yes |
| 60% | 100.0% | Yes |
Grading scales vary by institution — your school's own table and syllabus govern. Conversions shown here follow common published conventions.
Frequently asked questions
Why would a final be worth half the grade?
It is the norm in subjects assessed by comprehensive examination — mathematics, languages, law, and many European and Asian university systems — where the final is the only assessment covering the whole syllabus. Coursework in those courses is often formative rather than heavily weighted.
How much can one exam swing my grade?
With a 50% final, every point on the exam is half a point of course grade. The difference between a 60 and a 90 is fifteen points of final grade — three or four letter grades. No other weighting makes a single afternoon matter this much.
Does a heavy final favour me or hurt me?
It favours whoever is behind and threatens whoever is ahead. If your coursework average is below your target, the exam is the mechanism that closes the gap. If you are comfortably above it, the same weight is what a bad day would take away.
How should I prepare differently for a 50% final?
Start earlier and space the work, because cramming has its worst risk-reward ratio here: the downside is a third of your grade. Cumulative exams also reward reviewing early material that later coursework stopped testing, which is usually where the forgotten marks are.
