Seventy-five marks the Distinction line in Australia and the distinction convention in India, and it is the minimum a good many health-science programmes set for their own required courses. Where does 75 come from as a threshold?
From percentage-first systems rather than letter ones. Australian universities begin Distinction at 75, Indian institutions commonly label 75 and above as distinction, and nursing and allied-health programmes in North America often import the number for their own progression rules. None of those uses a letter grade to express it.
Why does a modest-looking target need a 90?
Because five points of course grade cost twenty exam points at this weight. Only a quarter of your grade is still open, so the exam has to be four times better than the improvement you want. That ratio, not the size of the gap, is what makes a small climb feel disproportionate.
Does my programme need 75 in this course or overall?
Ask, because the two are answered by different work. A per-course minimum makes this exam decisive on its own; an overall average lets a strong result elsewhere absorb a weak one here. Programmes that use both usually publish them in separate paragraphs, which is how people end up reading only one.
Can my final have a pass mark of its own?
It can, and it is common in exactly the systems that use 75 as a threshold. Some courses require a minimum on the examination component regardless of the coursework average, so a strong overall figure can still fail the course. The phrase to look for in the syllabus is a hurdle requirement.
