Does a B- satisfy a requirement written as "B or better"?
Frequently not, and this catches people every term. Departments that mean the letter usually name a minimum grade point instead — 3.0 excludes a B-minus, which is 2.7. If the wording is ambiguous, email the department rather than the instructor, because the requirement belongs to the programme rather than the course.
Why does 80 appear in so many rules?
It is the B-minus boundary in the United States, the A-minus boundary on several Canadian university scales, and a round number that reads as solid without demanding excellence. Graduate admissions, exchange programmes, and professional registrations all lean on it because it means something recognisable in more than one country.
How much is the 30% weight helping me here?
A good deal. Each point of course grade you are short costs 3.33 points on the exam at this weight, against five points if the final were worth 20% and ten if it were worth 10%. Being four points behind is recoverable at 30% and effectively impossible at 10%.
What if I am transferring this credit somewhere else?
Receiving institutions set their own floor for accepting a transferred course, and a B-minus falls right at the edge of the common ones. Check the transfer rule before the exam, since the difference between accepting and repeating a course is usually decided by a published number rather than by a conversation.
