What do I need on my final to get a D?
A D usually runs from 63% to 66% and earns credit without satisfying much else. Sitting at 57% with a final worth 30%, you need a 77 to reach it — and a 67 would clear the D-minus at 60. The full ladder of starting grades is below.
Common plus/minus convention; many schools use straight letters or different cut points.
You need 77% on the final.
That is within reach — the final is worth 30% of your grade.
🔢 Show the math
- Work graded so far covers 70% of the course; 30% is still to come.
- Points already banked: 57% × 70% = 39.9 points of the 100 available.
- To finish at 63% you still need 23.1 points from the remaining 30%.
- 23.1 ÷ 30 × 100 = 77% on what is left.
What you need, at every current grade
With a final worth 30% of your course grade and a D (63% on a plus-minus scale) as the goal, this is the score you need on the final from each starting point:
| Current grade | You need on the final | Reachable? |
|---|---|---|
| 72% | 42.0% | Yes |
| 66% | 56.0% | Yes |
| 61% | 67.7% | Yes |
| 57% | 77.0% | Yes |
| 51% | 91.0% | Yes |
| 44% | 107.3% | Not with this final alone |
Grading scales vary by institution — your school's own table and syllabus govern. Conversions shown here follow common published conventions.
Frequently asked questions
Does a D actually earn credit for the course?
For a general elective it normally does, and that is the whole reason the grade exists. What it usually will not do is satisfy a prerequisite, count toward a major, transfer to another institution, or keep you inside a programme that specifies a minimum grade in its required courses.
What is the difference between a D, a D-, and an F?
Six points of course grade and a large difference in consequence. A D-minus at 60 typically still earns credit at 0.7 grade points; below that the F earns none and stays in the GPA calculation as a zero until the course is retaken. The gap between 59 and 60 is the expensive one.
Will a D affect my financial aid?
It can, indirectly. Aid programmes generally test a cumulative GPA and a completion rate rather than individual grades, so one D is survivable while a term of them is not. If you are already near a satisfactory-progress warning, the aid office is the right place to ask before the exam rather than after.
Is it better to take the D or withdraw?
That turns on whether the credit is worth anything to you. A D that counts as an elective is usually worth keeping; a D in a course your programme requires at C or above buys nothing and costs GPA points. Check the withdrawal deadline, since the option closes long before grades are posted.
