Is an 80 a good grade or a mediocre one?
Both answers are correct depending on the transcript it appears on. An 80 is the lowest B on a US plus-minus scale and among the highest ordinary marks a UK module awards, where anything above 70 is First-Class work. Judging your own 80 against the wrong system is a common and avoidable mistake.
What is an "80% average" requirement really asking for?
Usually a weighted average across a defined set of courses — often the final two years, sometimes the whole degree, occasionally only the subjects relevant to the programme. The definition changes the answer more than any single course does, so find the wording before optimising one exam around it.
How big a jump is five points of course grade?
At a 30% final it means scoring 16.7 points above your current average, which is the difference between a C average and a solid A on one paper. That is a real ask, but it is an ordinary one — far more students manage it than manage the sixty-point swings that light finals demand.
