What letter is an 85?
It depends entirely on the system. On the US plus-minus scale it is a B, on the Canadian scale it is an A, and on Australian WAM bands it is the bottom of High Distinction. The same coursework therefore reads as ordinary or excellent depending on which registrar is printing it.
Why do graduate programmes ask for an 85 average?
Because it filters more sharply than a letter grade while staying comprehensible to international applicants. A B average admits a very wide field; an 85 average in the final two years of study is a narrower and more comparable claim, which is exactly what a competitive intake wants to measure.
How far can a 30% final move me from 81?
Between 56.7 and 86.7 — a thirty-point spread. That range is worth looking at as a whole rather than only at the top of it, because the same weight that puts an 85 within reach is the weight that would take a bad afternoon and turn your B into a D.
Should I target 85 or the letter boundary above me?
Work out both and pick deliberately. If the 85 is a stated requirement for something you want, it is the number that matters and the letter is decoration. If nothing external names it, the 87 that buys a B+ on your own transcript may be the more useful three points.
