What do I need on my final to pass?

Passing is usually 60% in the US and 50% in much of the Commonwealth. At 55% with 30% of the grade still to play for, you need a 71.7 to clear a 60% line. The table below shows the score required from every starting point, so you know exactly what you are working toward.

Common plus/minus convention; many schools use straight letters or different cut points.

You need 71.7% on the final.

That is within reach — the final is worth 30% of your grade.

  1. Work graded so far covers 70% of the course; 30% is still to come.
  2. Points already banked: 55% × 70% = 38.5 points of the 100 available.
  3. To finish at 60% you still need 21.5 points from the remaining 30%.
  4. 21.5 ÷ 30 × 100 = 71.67% on what is left.

What you need, at every current grade

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a passing grade?

Commonly 60% in the United States and 50% in the UK, Canada, and Australia, but the number that matters is the one in your syllabus. Some courses set a higher bar for a pass in a required subject, and some require passing the final itself regardless of the course average.

Can my final have a separate pass requirement?

Yes, and it catches people out. Some courses require a minimum score on the final exam itself — often 50 or 60 — no matter how strong your coursework has been. Look for the phrase "must pass the final" in the syllabus before relying on your average.

What happens if I fail the course?

That depends on your institution and the course's role in your programme. Retaking is often possible and sometimes replaces the original grade entirely; the failure may still appear on the transcript. Speak to an academic adviser early, since options narrow as deadlines pass.

Should I withdraw instead?

It is worth pricing seriously if the required score is above 100 and the deadline has not passed. A withdrawal typically shows as a W with no effect on your GPA, while a failing grade carries a zero and stays in the calculation until the course is retaken.
