What does a pass/fail grade do to my GPA?
At most institutions a P is excluded from the GPA entirely while its credits still count toward graduation, so a weak course stops dragging the average down. A failing grade under the same option often does count, which makes the downside asymmetric. A few schools convert the P to a letter for internal purposes.
When do I have to decide?
Earlier than most people expect — commonly a few weeks into the term, sometimes at the withdrawal deadline, and the election is frequently irreversible once made. That timing is deliberate, since it removes the option of waiting to see how the final goes. The academic calendar carries the exact date.
Will a pass count for my major or my next application?
That depends on two separate readers. Many departments refuse P credit inside the major or for prerequisites, so a pass can satisfy graduation and not the requirement it was taken for. Graduate and professional programmes often recalculate transcripts and read an unexplained P in a core subject as unknown.
What does the option cost when the course goes well?
A strong result becomes invisible. If the exam lands well above the pass line the transcript still shows only a P, and work that would have lifted the GPA does nothing for it. That is the trade the deadline forces you to price before you know how the course finishes.
