How do I raise a C to a B with the final?

Moving a whole letter takes more than a good exam. Going from 76% to a B at 83% with a final worth 40%, you need 93.5 — the exam has to beat your own average by seventeen and a half points. A lighter final would make the same jump arithmetically impossible, so weight is what decides this.

Common plus/minus convention; many schools use straight letters or different cut points.

You need 93.5% on the final.

That is within reach — the final is worth 40% of your grade.

  1. Work graded so far covers 60% of the course; 40% is still to come.
  2. Points already banked: 76% × 60% = 45.6 points of the 100 available.
  3. To finish at 83% you still need 37.4 points from the remaining 40%.
  4. 37.4 ÷ 40 × 100 = 93.5% on what is left.

What you need, at every current grade

With a final worth 40% of your course grade and a B (83% on a plus-minus scale) as the goal, this is the score you need on the final from each starting point:

Frequently asked questions

How much does one letter grade actually cost?

Seven points of course average, from 76 to 83, and the exam has to supply all of it out of its own share. Divide the gap by the final's weight to see the surcharge: seven divided by 0.4 is 17.5, so the paper must land 17.5 points above your current average rather than seven.

Would a lighter final make this easier?

The opposite. Halve the weight to 20% and the same seven-point gap demands 35 points above your average, which puts the requirement past 100 and out of reach. Every point of distance costs one over the weight, so heavy finals are the only ones that let a letter grade move this late.

Where do the marks come from at this level?

Rarely from rereading. A 93.5 requires near-complete coverage, so the efficient route is past papers under timed conditions to find which topics collapse, followed by targeted work on those alone. Cumulative finals reward revisiting early material that later coursework stopped assessing, which is usually where the recoverable marks sit.

Is a B-minus a better target?

Price both before choosing. A B-minus at 80 needs 86 here, seven and a half points below the B, and the difference between those two exam scores is often the difference between a plan and a hope. If nothing external depends on the full B, the lower target bought with margin is worth more.
