Does failing the final mean failing the course?
Not usually. Your course grade is a weighted average, so a poor exam is diluted by everything already banked. The exception is a syllabus clause requiring a minimum score on the final itself — some courses will not award a pass without one, whatever the average says. Look for that sentence before relying on the arithmetic here.
What is the lowest I can score and still pass the course?
Set the target to your institution's pass mark and read the required score. From 78% with a 20% final, a 60% pass line needs only a 15 on the exam. That number falls as your banked grade rises and climbs steeply once the final carries more weight, so compute it with your own figures.
Can I retake a final I failed?
Retake policies differ sharply: some departments offer a supplemental or deferred sitting, some cap the second result at a bare pass, and many offer nothing at all. Where a resit exists it is usually governed by faculty rules rather than by the instructor, so the registrar or an academic adviser is the right person to ask.
Should I sit an exam I expect to fail?
Sitting it almost always beats missing it, because a weak score still adds points while an absence is normally recorded as zero and can trigger separate consequences.
