Project Management

Project management is one of the few fields where a certification genuinely functions as an entry ticket, because the work is hard to demonstrate without having done it. This covers the entry credential, its education requirement, and the honest gap between CAPM and PMP.

CAPM and PMP are not the same rung

CAPM is the entry credential and expects no project management experience, though it does require formal project management education. PMP requires substantial documented experience leading projects and is the one that changes salaries. Conflating them is the commonest mistake here: CAPM opens a door, PMP is what people mean when they say the certification is valuable.

Predictive and agile both matter now

Exam content has shifted to cover both traditional phase-based delivery and agile approaches, which reflects how organisations actually work — most run some mixture. Preparing for only one leaves a real gap, and in practice the judgement about which approach suits a given piece of work is more valuable than fluency in either.

The part the exam cannot test

Most project failures are communication failures rather than scheduling failures. The exam can test whether you know what a stakeholder register is; it cannot test whether you will notice that two teams have quietly assumed different definitions of done. That judgement comes from doing the work, which is why the credential is a beginning rather than a qualification.

Where it leads

  1. Project coordinator / administrator

Supporting a project manager: tracking, scheduling, documentation, and chasing. The standard entry point and the one CAPM is aimed at.

  2. Project manager

Owning delivery of a project end to end. Usually two to four years after coordination, and the point at which PMP becomes worth pursuing.

  3. Programme or portfolio manager

Multiple related projects, and increasingly the question of which projects should exist at all rather than how to run them.

Frequently asked questions

CAPM or PMP first?

CAPM, unless you already have years of documented experience leading projects — PMP's experience requirement is substantial and audited. CAPM requires project management education but no experience, which is exactly why it exists as an entry route into a field that is otherwise hard to break into.

Do I need to be a project manager to get certified?

Not for CAPM. It is designed for people supporting projects, changing careers, or moving into delivery from another discipline. PMP is different: it requires documented experience leading projects, and PMI audits a proportion of applications, so the requirement is real rather than nominal.

Is the certification actually worth it?

More than in most fields, because project management competence is genuinely hard to evidence from outside. In technology and construction especially, PMP appears in listings as a hard requirement. CAPM carries less weight but is a legible signal for someone with no delivery history yet.

How much agile do I need to know?

Meaningfully more than a passing familiarity — exam content now covers both predictive and agile approaches, and the questions frequently turn on choosing appropriately between them. Knowing the ceremonies is not enough; knowing when an iterative approach suits the work is the tested skill.
