Tres registros, una sola idea

Module 11 of the free Spanish course (CEFR C1, first half), lesson 1 of 30: Welcome to the Proficient band. On this page: 10 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

La regla · The rule

Welcome to the Proficient band. C1 is not more vocabulary so much as CHOICE: the same idea said three ways. Coloquial: está reventado. Neutro: está muy cansado. Culto: está exhausto.

Y también · And also

Spanish grammars name the levels registro coloquial, registro neutro and registro culto (or formal). The one you pick tells a listener who you are being — a friend, a colleague, a writer — and every lesson here asks which one the moment deserves.

Ojo · Watch out

reventado (worn out) is coloquial and fine among friends; exhausto is its culto twin. Neither is wrong — each belongs to a room. And registro here is the level of language, not a record.

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 10 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el registro.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write two sentences of your own that get the watch-out line right, then the two practice pages of workbook lesson 1 in Module 11 are the written half of this page.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
