Causa y consecuencia, al completo

Module 11 of the free Spanish course (CEFR C1, first half), lesson 27 of 30: Beyond porque: dado que (given that), en la medida en que (insofar as). On this page: 9 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

La regla · The rule

Beyond porque: dado que (given that), en la medida en que (insofar as), debido a (owing to) — and on the consequence side, de ahí (hence), de modo que (so that), hasta el punto de que (to the point where).

Y también · And also

Dado que el tren está cancelado, partiremos en carro — de ahí un retraso de dos horas. Dado que and en la medida en que take a clause; debido a takes a noun; de ahí que takes the subjunctive: de ahí que llegáramos tarde.

Ojo · Watch out

de ahí + noun (de ahí el retraso); de ahí que + subjuntivo (de ahí que llegáramos tarde). debido a takes a noun, debido a que a clause. And cancelado is the everyday word; suspendido is what a notice prints.

partir, futuro — the table

yo partiré · tú partirás · él/ella/usted partirá · nosotros partiremos · ustedes partirán · ellos/ellas partirán

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with dado que.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out partir, futuro in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
