La regla · The rule

Feelings and doubt take it too: me alegro de que estés aquí, siento que se vaya, dudo que tenga razón, temo que sea demasiado tarde.

Y también · And also

One tidy rule to carry: certainty takes the indicative, uncertainty the subjunctive. Es cierto que viene — es posible que venga. And a feeling about a finished fact still takes it: me alegro de que hayas venido.

Ojo · Watch out

Certainty takes the indicative, uncertainty the subjunctive: es cierto que viene, es posible que venga. temer is the formal fear; tener miedo de que is the everyday one. And sentir before que means to be sorry, not to feel.

temer, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo tema · tú temas · él/ella/usted tema · nosotros temamos · ustedes teman · ellos/ellas teman

sentir, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo sienta · tú sientas · él/ella/usted sienta · nosotros sintamos · ustedes sientan · ellos/ellas sientan

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with dudo que.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out temer, presente de subjuntivo and sentir, presente de subjuntivo in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
