La regla · The rule

An editorial argues; a news article reports; a columna de opinión is a signed opinion piece and carries its author's name for a reason. Knowing which one you are reading is half of reading it.

Y también · And also

The tell is the first person and the value words: es inaceptable que, no cabe sino deplorar. A news report that contains those sentences is not a news report. And the gender matters: el editorial is the piece; la editorial is the publishing house.

Ojo · Watch out

el editorial is the leading article; la editorial is a publishing house — one word, two genders, two meanings. Value words like inaceptable or deplorar mark opinion, whatever the page calls itself.

lamentar, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo lamente · tú lamentes · él/ella/usted lamente · nosotros lamentemos · ustedes lamenten · ellos/ellas lamenten

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el editorial.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out lamentar, presente de subjuntivo in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
