Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.
La regla · The rule
Look back at Module 1 of this band. You now read the forms Spanish writes and never says, carry aspect in a verb phrase, build a formal sentence and punctuate it, read a newspaper for its position as well as its facts, choose a word for its register, and write the two texts the DELE C1 sets. With Module 1, that is the C1 material of this band.
Y también · And also
Module 3 opens C2, where correctness is assumed and the whole question becomes which of several correct things to say. Ya no se trata de tener razón — it is no longer about being right.
Ojo · Watch out
tratarse de is impersonal and takes only se: se trata de, ya no se trata de. dar por sentado means to take as given; la justeza is aptness, not justice (that is la justicia).
terminar, pretérito perfecto — the table
yo he terminado · tú has terminado · él/ella/usted ha terminado · nosotros hemos terminado · ustedes han terminado · ellos/ellas han terminado
Do it now — on paper
Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with ya no se trata de tener razón.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out terminar, pretérito perfecto in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
