La regla · The rule

A riesgo de means at the risk of: lo diré, a riesgo de equivocarme. A falta de means for want of: a falta de pruebas, el caso fue archivado.

Y también · And also

A reserva de is the third: subject to — a reserva de confirmación. All three compress a whole subordinate clause into three words, which is what C2 vocabulary is mostly for.

Ojo · Watch out

a riesgo de, a falta de and a reserva de take a noun or an infinitive: a riesgo de equivocarme, a falta de pruebas, a reserva de confirmación. With a clause it is a reserva de que + subjuntivo.

archivar, voz pasiva en pretérito — the table

él fue archivado · ella fue archivada · ellos fueron archivados · ellas fueron archivadas

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with a riesgo de.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out archivar, voz pasiva en pretérito in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
