Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

La regla · The rule

An essay is one mind moving, and following it means tracking the turns rather than the facts. Mark every ahora bien, every sin embargo, every en realidad — those are where the thought changes direction.

Y también · And also

A good test when you finish: can you say what the writer changed their mind about? If nothing turned, you have read a list of opinions, not an ensayo.

Ojo · Watch out

Follow the turns, not the facts: mark every ahora bien, sin embargo and en realidad. If nothing turned, you have read a list of opinions, not an ensayo. seguir changes its stem: sigo, sigues.

seguir, presente — the table

yo sigo · tú sigues · él/ella/usted sigue · nosotros seguimos · ustedes siguen · ellos/ellas siguen

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with en realidad.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out seguir, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
