La regla · The rule
To change subject without losing the thread, Spanish announces the new topic. En cuanto al presupuesto, la cuestión queda abierta. Por lo que respecta a los plazos, ya hablaremos.
Y también · And also
Respecto a is the third of the family and the most neutral. All three belong at the head of a paragraph as topic-shifters; en cuanto a after a verb (preguntar en cuanto a) is a different, ordinary use.
Ojo · Watch out
en cuanto a, por lo que respecta a and respecto a belong at the HEAD of a paragraph. Mid-sentence they read as a translated text. en cuanto a + el contracts: en cuanto al presupuesto.
quedar, presente — the table
yo quedo · tú quedas · él/ella/usted queda · nosotros quedamos · ustedes quedan · ellos/ellas quedan
Do it now — on paper
Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with en cuanto a.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out quedar, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
