La regla · The rule

Formal Spanish asserts things without a person attached. Resulta que las cifras eran falsas. De este estudio se desprende que… Parece ser que…

Y también · And also

Each one has a temperature. Resulta que means it turned out (and someone was wrong). Se desprende means the text shows it. Parece ser que is the most cautious of the three — the writer will not even say parece.

Ojo · Watch out

resulta que means it turned out that, and someone was wrong; parece ser que is the cautious one. desprenderse de takes de: de este estudio se desprende que — the study is the source, not the subject.

resultar, presente — the table

yo resulto · tú resultas · él/ella/usted resulta · nosotros resultamos · ustedes resultan · ellos/ellas resultan

desprenderse, presente — the table

yo me desprendo · tú te desprendes · él/ella/usted se desprende · nosotros nos desprendemos · ustedes se desprenden · ellos/ellas se desprenden

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 10 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with resulta que.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out resultar, presente and desprenderse, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
