La regla · The rule
Jugar (to play) is the only u-to-ue verb: juego, juegas, juega, jugamos, juegan. Dormir (to sleep) is o-to-ue: duermo, duermes, duerme, dormimos, duermen.
Y también · And also
Juego fútbol los sábados. Duermo ocho horas. Entender (to understand) is e-to-ie: entiendo — the word you will say most in class after ¿cómo?
Ojo · Watch out
jugar changes u to ue, the only verb that does: juego, but jugamos. And in Latin America you play fútbol, no article needed: juego fútbol.
jugar, presente — the table
yo juego · tú juegas · él/ella/usted juega · nosotros jugamos · ustedes juegan · ellos/ellas juegan
dormir, presente — the table
yo duermo · tú duermes · él/ella/usted duerme · nosotros dormimos · ustedes duermen · ellos/ellas duermen
Do it now — on paper
Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with jugar.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out jugar, presente and dormir, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
