Se lo doy — two pronouns together

Module 6 of the free Spanish course (CEFR B1, first half), lesson 23 of 30: Two pronouns can share the slot, and the order is fixed: the TO-person first. On this page: 8 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

La regla · The rule

Two pronouns can share the slot, and the order is fixed: the TO-person first, the thing second. Me lo prestas (you lend it to me), te lo digo (I tell you it), nos los dan (they give them to us).

Y también · And also

One sound rule changes everything: le + lo would give le lo, and Spanish refuses two l-words together, so le becomes se. Le doy el libro a María — se lo doy. Se la traigo. That se is not reflexive; it is le in disguise.

Ojo · Watch out

le or les before lo, la, los, las becomes se: se lo doy, never le lo doy. And the order never flips: the person first, the thing second — me lo, te la, se los.

traer, presente — the table

yo traigo · tú traes · él/ella/usted trae · nosotros traemos · ustedes traen · ellos/ellas traen

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with se lo doy.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out traer, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
