Los estudios y la formación

Module 7 of the free Spanish course (CEFR B1, completed), lesson 12 of 30: Study vocabulary is where Spanish and English drift apart. On this page: 9 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

La regla · The rule

Study vocabulary is where Spanish and English drift apart. La carrera is a degree course, not a race here; la licenciatura is the first university degree; la materia is a school subject; la formación is training — the word covers a college course and a two-day workshop alike.

Y también · And also

Estudio derecho — I am studying law. Aprobar is to pass an exam, and its opposite is reprobar in Latin America (suspender in Spain). El diploma is the paper you get at the end; el título is also used for it, but that word you already know as the title.

Ojo · Watch out

la carrera is the degree course in this unit, not a race. aprobar is to pass an exam — approve is a different sense of the same verb. And la licenciatura is a bachelor's degree, not a license.

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with estudiar.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write two sentences of your own that get the watch-out line right, then the two practice pages of workbook lesson 12 in Module 7 are the written half of this page.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
