La regla · The rule

A job application has two fixed pieces: el currículum (the CV) and la carta de presentación — the cover letter. Solicito el puesto de… is the sentence it opens with, and la solicitud is the application itself.

Y también · And also

The rest of the vocabulary is close to English but not identical: el empleo is employment in general, el puesto is the specific position, la vacante is the opening, and la entrevista is the interview. Ella es invitada a la entrevista — the passive, doing real work.

Ojo · Watch out

la carta de presentación is the cover letter; la solicitud is the application; el puesto is a specific position while el empleo is employment in general. And contratar is to hire — contratar a alguien, with the personal a.

invitar, voz pasiva — the table

él es invitado · ella es invitada · ellos son invitados · ellas son invitadas

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el empleo.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out invitar, voz pasiva in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
