La regla · The rule
A reported question loses its question marks. «¿Vienes?» becomes él pregunta si vienes — he asks whether you are coming. Si is the word for whether, and it carries no accent, unlike sí (yes).
Y también · And also
For a what-question the question word stays, accent and all: «¿Qué haces?» becomes pregunta qué haces. The word order goes back to normal — subject, then verb — and the two marks disappear. That is the tell that you have reported it properly.
Ojo · Watch out
A reported question loses its marks: él pregunta si vienes. si (whether) has no accent; sí (yes) does. And the question word keeps ITS accent inside the report: pregunta qué haces.
preguntar, presente — the table
yo pregunto · tú preguntas · él/ella/usted pregunta · nosotros preguntamos · ustedes preguntan · ellos/ellas preguntan
Do it now — on paper
Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with él pregunta si vienes.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out preguntar, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
