El balance — B1 complete

Module 7 of the free Spanish course (CEFR B1, completed), lesson 30 of 30: Look back at Lesson 1. On this page: 8 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

La regla · The rule

Look back at Lesson 1. You now bend a verb into the subjunctive after will and need, describe a body that hurts, talk about work and money, pass on what other people said, refuse in five different ways, and write the four texts B1 asks for. Added to Module 1, that is the complete B1 level — on paper, in your own handwriting.

Y también · And also

Module 3 opens B2, where the question stops being what happened and becomes what do you think, and why. Lo más difícil ya pasó — the hardest part is over.

Ojo · Watch out

lo más difícil ya pasó: lo + adjective makes a noun phrase, the hardest part. And el nivel B1 keeps the capitals of B1 — the CEFR code is a name, not a word.

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el balance.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write two sentences of your own that get the watch-out line right, then the two practice pages of workbook lesson 30 in Module 7 are the written half of this page.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
