La regla · The rule

A short list of conjunctions demands the subjunctive every time, whatever the sentence means: antes de que (before), para que (so that), con tal de que (provided that), sin que (without), a menos que (unless). Hasta que takes it when the event is still to come: hasta que llegues.

Y también · And also

Llámame antes de que salga — call me before I leave. Te lo explico para que entiendas — I am explaining so that you understand. These are worth memorizing as a list, because no logic tells you which conjunctions are on it.

Ojo · Watch out

antes de que, para que, con tal de que and a menos que ALWAYS take the subjunctive. después de que does not for a past event: después de que llegó. And porque never does: porque tengo tiempo.

salir, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo salga · tú salgas · él/ella/usted salga · nosotros salgamos · ustedes salgan · ellos/ellas salgan

venir, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo venga · tú vengas · él/ella/usted venga · nosotros vengamos · ustedes vengan · ellos/ellas vengan

poder, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo pueda · tú puedas · él/ella/usted pueda · nosotros podamos · ustedes puedan · ellos/ellas puedan

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with antes de que.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out salir, presente de subjuntivo and venir, presente de subjuntivo and poder, presente de subjuntivo in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
