La regla · The rule

Feeling about something someone else does is the second great subjunctive trigger. Me alegro de que vengas, tengo miedo de que sea tarde, es una lástima que no puedan quedarse. Siento que (I am sorry that) and me sorprende que (I am surprised that) join the list.

Y también · And also

The list is long but the pattern is one: an emotion word, then que, then a DIFFERENT person. If the person is the same, the infinitive returns: me alegro de venir. Notice the de that alegrarse and tener miedo carry: me alegro DE que, tengo miedo DE que.

Ojo · Watch out

Emotion + que + a DIFFERENT person takes the subjunctive: me alegro de que vengas. The same person takes the infinitive: me alegro de venir. And the de stays: me alegro de que, never me alegro que.

venir, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo venga · tú vengas · él/ella/usted venga · nosotros vengamos · ustedes vengan · ellos/ellas vengan

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with me alegro de que vengas.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out venir, presente de subjuntivo in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
