La regla · The rule

Four families take the subjunctive, plus one relative-clause case (next lesson): will (querer que, es importante que), wish (ojalá, espero que), emotion (me alegro de que, es una lástima que) and doubt (dudo que, es posible que, the negated opinion).

Y también · And also

Plus the fixed conjunctions: para que, antes de que, sin que, a menos que, con tal de que, por mucho que — and aunque and hasta que when the thing is still to come. Copy the list onto one card. Everything outside it takes the indicative, porque and ya que included.

Ojo · Watch out

Four families and the conjunction list take the subjunctive; everything else takes the indicative. When in doubt, ask: is this asserted as real? If yes, indicative. porque, ya que and puesto que are always indicative.

querer, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo quiera · tú quieras · él/ella/usted quiera · nosotros queramos · ustedes quieran · ellos/ellas quieran

poder, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo pueda · tú puedas · él/ella/usted pueda · nosotros podamos · ustedes puedan · ellos/ellas puedan

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with sin que.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out querer, presente de subjuntivo and poder, presente de subjuntivo in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
