La regla · The rule
Every text about society or the environment is really a text about things going up and down. Aumentar is to increase, disminuir to decrease, reducir to cut back, and evolucionar to change over time.
Y también · And also
They work both ways, with or without an object: los precios aumentan (prices are rising) and el gobierno aumenta los precios (the government is raising prices). Watch which one a sentence means before you translate it. Reducir takes zc in the yo form: reduzco.
Ojo · Watch out
aumentar and disminuir work with or without an object: los precios aumentan (prices rise) and aumentan los precios (they raise prices). Read which one a sentence is doing. And la bajada is the drop; bajar is to go down.
aumentar, presente — the table
yo aumento · tú aumentas · él/ella/usted aumenta · nosotros aumentamos · ustedes aumentan · ellos/ellas aumentan
reducir, presente — the table
yo reduzco · tú reduces · él/ella/usted reduce · nosotros reducimos · ustedes reducen · ellos/ellas reducen
producir, voz pasiva — the table
él es producido · ella es producida · ellos son producidos · ellas son producidas
Do it now — on paper
Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with aumentar.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out aumentar, presente and reducir, presente and producir, voz pasiva in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
