Los tres si, juntos

Module 8 of the free Spanish course (CEFR B2, first half), lesson 26 of 30: You have met the three si-sentences separately, here they are in one place. On this page: 9 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

La regla · The rule

You have met the three si-sentences separately; here they are in one place, because choosing between them is a B2 skill. Si + presente + futuro: si tengo tiempo, iré — a real possibility.

Y también · And also

Si + imperfecto de subjuntivo + condicional: si tuviera tiempo, iría — unlikely, or imagined. Si + pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo + condicional compuesto: si hubiera tenido tiempo, habría ido — too late, it did not happen. Three distances from reality, one word.

Ojo · Watch out

None of the three si-levels takes a condicional or a futuro right after si: si tengo, si tuviera, si hubiera tenido. The condicional and the futuro belong to the OTHER half. Never si tendría.

tener, imperfecto de subjuntivo — the table

yo tuviera · tú tuvieras · él/ella/usted tuviera · nosotros tuviéramos · ustedes tuvieran · ellos/ellas tuvieran

venir, condicional — the table

yo vendría · tú vendrías · él/ella/usted vendría · nosotros vendríamos · ustedes vendrían · ellos/ellas vendrían

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with si tengo tiempo, iré.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out tener, imperfecto de subjuntivo and venir, condicional in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
