La regla · The rule

Tenses are not the only thing that moves. Time words shift too, because the reporting happens later: hoy becomes ese día, ayer becomes el día anterior, mañana becomes al día siguiente.

Y también · And also

Ahora becomes en aquel momento, la semana que viene becomes la semana siguiente, hace tres días becomes tres días antes. Learn them as pairs and reported speech stops being frightening. Había hecho: hacer's participle is hecho, with its h — and no c.

Ojo · Watch out

ayer becomes el día anterior, mañana becomes al día siguiente, hoy becomes ese día, ahora becomes en aquel momento — only when the reporting is in the PAST. And the participle of hacer is hecho, never hacido.

hacer, pluscuamperfecto — the table

yo había hecho · tú habías hecho · él/ella/usted había hecho · nosotros habíamos hecho · ustedes habían hecho · ellos/ellas habían hecho

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with ese día.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out hacer, pluscuamperfecto in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
