La regla · The rule

Now put it together. Take four lines of dialogue and report the whole exchange in one paragraph, with a different reporting verb each time and no quotation marks at all.

Y también · And also

Explicó que estaba cansado. Respondí que entendía. Añadió que saldría al día siguiente. Le pregunté si volvería. This is the single most examined B2 writing skill. Quería is the imperfecto of querer — what she wanted at the time.

Ojo · Watch out

Vary the reporting verb — explicar, responder, añadir, preguntar — and keep the tense shift on each one. A reported paragraph with decir four times reads as a transcript.

querer, imperfecto — the table

yo quería · tú querías · él/ella/usted quería · nosotros queríamos · ustedes querían · ellos/ellas querían

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with explicó que estaba cansado.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out querer, imperfecto in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
