La regla · The rule
Not every regret needs a conditional. Arrepentirse de plus the past infinitive is shorter and very common: me arrepiento de haberlo dicho — I regret having said it. The pronoun rides on the infinitive: haberlo.
Y también · And also
Ojalá plus the pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo is the wistful one: ojalá hubiera escuchado — if only I had listened. Arrepentirse changes its stem: me arrepiento, te arrepientes, se arrepiente, but nos arrepentimos.
Ojo · Watch out
arrepentirse de + past infinitive: me arrepiento de haber dicho eso — haber + participle after de. And ojalá + hubiera: ojalá hubiera escuchado. Never ojalá habría.
arrepentirse, presente — the table
yo me arrepiento · tú te arrepientes · él/ella/usted se arrepiente · nosotros nos arrepentimos · ustedes se arrepienten · ellos/ellas se arrepienten
Do it now — on paper
Say all 10 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with me arrepiento de haberlo dicho.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out arrepentirse, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
