Basic Electrical Practice Test

Twenty-five original questions covering the ground an introductory electrical course covers: safety and lockout/tagout, Ohm's law and basic circuit math, series and parallel behavior, conductors and insulators, grounding and bonding, meter work, and residential branch circuits. Every answer comes with an explanation, and your results break down by topic so you can see exactly where the gaps are.

Not affiliated with or endorsed by any certification body. These are original study questions written for self-assessment — not questions from any actual exam.

For information and self-assessment only, to help you prepare. Always refer to the official certifying body's own materials and content outline as the source of record.

What it covers

25 questions across 7 topics, scored by topic so you can see where the gaps are rather than just how many you missed:

  • Safety and lockout/tagout
  • Circuit math
  • Series and parallel
  • Conductors and insulators
  • Grounding and bonding
  • Tools and testing
  • Residential circuits

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real electrician licensing exam?

No. Every question here is written from scratch to cover the same ground an introductory electrical course covers. Reproducing questions from a real exam would breach copyright and the candidate agreement, and it would teach you nothing useful anyway. Licensing is issued by your state or provincial authority, and this practice test is study material only.

What score means I am ready?

Seventy percent is the threshold used here, and clearing it comfortably in every topic is a better signal than clearing it on average. A strong overall number hiding a weak safety or grounding section is the pattern that catches people out, which is why the results break down by topic instead of giving you one figure.

How long should this take and how should I use it?

About twenty-five minutes at a steady pace, roughly a minute per question. Use it early rather than at the end: a test taken before you feel ready shows you what to study, and one taken after only confirms what you already suspected. Space your retakes a few days apart rather than repeating immediately.

Why does this test avoid quoting code article numbers?

Because electrical code varies by country, state, and adopted edition, and an article number that is correct in one jurisdiction is wrong or renumbered in another. These questions test the concept behind the rule, which travels. When you need the exact requirement for a job, read the code edition your local authority has actually adopted.
