About this book

Book two of the cursive pair, and it is not a second alphabet.

Book one teaches the letters. This one never goes back to them. It starts at whole words and climbs to real sentences, because the hard part of cursive is not making the letters, it is keeping the pen moving between them. The letters are the traditional American looped cursive taught in school, and every join on every page is drawn by the lettering itself, so the model and the dotted copy always agree.

  • 139 words on a real ladder: three letters, then four, then five, then the long ones a child actually needs, the colors, the numbers, things to count, the days of the week, the months of the year and the four seasons
  • The seven hard joins, each on its own page: out of r, into s, from the top into a round letter, from underneath, b into r, and the double letters
  • 24 phrases, where the space between words becomes its own skill, and 48 sentences with capitals and periods, including sentences that carry on to a second line
  • The help fades inside every exercise: a solid model, a dotted copy to trace, a row that starts the first word for you, then your own line
  • Six pages with no model at all: the sentence is printed, you write the cursive, the step every cursive book leaves out
  • The four checks on a whole sentence (shape, size, spacing, slant), fifteen real facts to copy, each one checked against the zoo, university or science agency that published it, four things to write about, and a cursive record to keep
  • Your own signature: the one piece of cursive a grown-up still writes by hand, and the only writing in the book that does not have to match a model — it only has to be the same every time

For ages 8 to 12, on the three-line ruling school uses, 8.5 by 11 inches so every writing row is full size. A black dot marks each place the pen starts. Ten minutes at a time is plenty.
