Dans la salle de classe — twelve classroom words

Your first themed word set: twelve things in a classroom or on a desk, each with its article and respelling — le livre, le stylo, la chaise, la fenêtre and friends. These are the nouns the next four lessons build sentences from, so the article-habit gets its first real workout here.

The words

FrenchEnglishSay it
le livrethe bookluh LEEVR
le stylothe penluh stee-LOH
le crayonthe pencilluh kreh-YOH(n)
le cahierthe notebookluh kah-YAY
le sacthe bagluh SAHK
le bureauthe deskluh bew-ROH
le tableauthe boardluh tah-BLOH
la tablethe tablelah TAHBL
la chaisethe chairlah SHEHZ
la portethe doorlah PORT
la fenêtrethe windowlah fuh-NEHTR
la gommethe eraserlah GOHM

Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

Hear the words

Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

Sort by gender as you learn

Seven of these are le-words and five are la-words. Writing them in two columns — le on the left, la on the right — is a memory trick that costs nothing and pays every time the word comes back.

Do it now — on paper

  1. Write the twelve words in two gender columns from memory; check, fix, repeat tomorrow.
  2. Touch five of these objects around you and name each aloud with its article.
  3. Quiz a partner: they say the English, you answer with article + noun + the un/une form.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.

Keep these words

Turn this lesson’s words into flashcards, then space your reviews — the two habits the research behind our study guides backs hardest.
