Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

La règle · The rule

The most useful hypothetical in daily life is advice, and French has a ready-made opener: à ta place, je refuserais — if I were you, I would refuse. No si at all, and the conditional does the work.

Et aussi · And also

Its formal twin is à votre place. And si j'étais toi is the literal version, correct but heavier. Most speakers reach for à ta place first.

Attention · Watch out

à ta place, je refuserais has no si and no imparfait — the conditional stands alone. Its formal twin is à votre place.

faire, conditionnel — the table

je ferais · tu ferais · il/elle ferait · nous ferions · vous feriez · ils/elles feraient

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with à ta place.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out faire, conditionnel in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
