Hear the words

Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

La règle · The rule

Eight conjunctions take the subjunctive and you should know them by heart: bien que, quoique, avant que, jusqu'à ce que, pour que, afin que, à condition que, sans que.

Et aussi · And also

Three that look like them do NOT: après que (indicative, because it has already happened), parce que, and même si. Après que is the one careful French writers argue about, and the grammar books are clear: indicative.

Attention · Watch out

après que takes the INDICATIVE, because it has already happened, however much it looks like avant que. The eight subjunctive conjunctions are a fixed list: learn them by heart.

attendre, subjonctif — the table

je attende · tu attendes · il/elle attende · nous attendions · vous attendiez · ils/elles attendent

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with après que.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out attendre, subjonctif in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
