Le subjonctif passé

Module 11 of the free French course (CEFR C1, first half), lesson 10 of 30: When the subjunctive clause happened FIRST. On this page: 7 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's lesson 10.

Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

La règle · The rule

When the subjunctive clause happened FIRST, it goes compound: subjunctive of avoir or être plus the participle. Je suis content qu'il ait réussi. Bien qu'elle soit partie tôt, elle est arrivée en retard.

Et aussi · And also

The agreement rules do not change: the être club still agrees — qu'elle soit venue, qu'ils soient rentrés.

Attention · Watch out

The subjonctif passé is avoir or être in the subjunctive plus the participle: qu'il ait réussi, qu'elle soit partie. The être club keeps its agreement: qu'elles soient venues.

parler, subjonctif passé — the table

je aie parlé · tu aies parlé · il/elle ait parlé · nous ayons parlé · vous ayez parlé · ils/elles aient parlé

aller, subjonctif passé — the table

il soit allé · elle soit allée · ils soient allés · elles soient allées

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 7 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with qu'il ait réussi.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out parler, subjonctif passé and aller, subjonctif passé in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
