Relire une synthèse

Module 15 of the free French course (CEFR C2 mastery — the capstone), lesson 5 of 30: Three checks, and they are specific to this task. On this page: 8 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's lesson 5.

Hear the words

Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

La règle · The rule

Three checks, and they are specific to this task. One: is there a je, a selon moi, an opinion adjective anywhere? Two: does every paragraph carry an idea rather than a text?

Et aussi · And also

Three: could a reader who has not seen the documents follow it? If the answer to the third is no, the synthesis has quoted rather than synthesized, and it will read as a reading list.

Attention · Watch out

Three checks: no je or selon moi, one idea per paragraph, and could a reader who has not seen the documents follow it? citer au lieu de synthétiser is the failure the third check catches — quoting is not synthesizing.

relever — the table

je relève · tu relèves · il/elle relève · nous relevons · vous relevez · ils/elles relèvent

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with l'adjectif d'opinion.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out relever in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
