Vendre, attendre — the -re family

Module 3 of the free French course (CEFR A2, first half), lesson 9 of 30: ), nous vendons, vous vendez, ils vendent. On this page: 7 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's lesson 9.

Hear the words

Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

La règle · The rule

The third family ends in -re: je vends, tu vends, il vend (no ending at all!), nous vendons, vous vendez, ils vendent.

Et aussi · And also

Attendre (to wait) matches. The participle ends in -u: j'ai vendu, nous avons attendu.

Attention · Watch out

il vend has no ending at all — not il vendt, not il vende. In the -re family the il-form is the bare stem.

vendre — the table

je vends · tu vends · il/elle vend · nous vendons · vous vendez · ils/elles vendent

attendre — the table

je attends · tu attends · il/elle attend · nous attendons · vous attendez · ils/elles attendent

vendre, passé composé — the table

je ai vendu · tu as vendu · il/elle a vendu · nous avons vendu · vous avez vendu · ils/elles ont vendu

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 7 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with vendre.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out vendre and attendre and vendre, passé composé in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
