Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

La règle · The rule

When the action points back at yourself, French says so: se lever (to get up) — je me lève, tu te lèves, il se lève. The little me/te/se is part of the verb.

Et aussi · And also

Je me lève à sept heures — I get up at seven. The reflexive day starts here.

Attention · Watch out

je me lève carries a grave accent (lève), but nous nous levons does not: the accent appears only where that e is stressed.

se lever — the table

je me lève · tu te lèves · il/elle se lève · nous nous levons · vous vous levez · ils/elles se lèvent

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 7 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with se lever.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out se lever in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
