La règle · The rule

S'habiller (to get dressed) elides its se: je m'habille. Se coucher (to go to bed) closes the day: je me couche à neuf heures.

Et aussi · And also

The reflexive day, in order: je me lève, je me lave, je m'habille, je me brosse les dents… je me couche.

Attention · Watch out

s'habiller elides to je m'habille (the h is silent). The reflexive pronoun changes with the person: je m', tu t', il s'.

s'habiller — the table

je m'habille · tu t'habilles · il/elle s'habille · nous nous habillons · vous vous habillez · ils/elles s'habillent

se coucher — the table

je me couche · tu te couches · il/elle se couche · nous nous couchons · vous vous couchez · ils/elles se couchent

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 7 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with s'habiller.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out s'habiller and se coucher in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
