Hear the words

Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

La règle · The rule

At B1 you are expected to read a short newspaper article and say what it is about — not every word of it. Three questions get you there: what happened, who is involved, and what does the writer think?

Et aussi · And also

Useful furniture: le titre (headline), le journaliste, selon (according to), d'après une étude (according to a study). If a sentence defeats you, skip it and keep the thread.

Attention · Watch out

selon and d'après both mean according to and take a noun straight after: selon lui, d'après une étude. Never selon de.

lire — the table

je lis · tu lis · il/elle lit · nous lisons · vous lisez · ils/elles lisent

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with l'article.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out lire in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
