La règle · The rule

A doctor's appointment is a B1 conversation: you have to describe something invisible, in order, to someone in a hurry. Start with the sentence every French doctor expects: je ne me sens pas bien — I do not feel well.

Et aussi · And also

Then name it. J'ai de la fièvre (I have a fever), je tousse (I am coughing), j'ai la grippe (I have the flu). The verb se sentir is reflexive: je me sens, tu te sens, il se sent.

Attention · Watch out

je ne me sens pas bien: se sentir is reflexive, so the me stays inside the ne... pas sandwich. Never je ne sens pas bien.

se sentir — the table

je me sens · tu te sens · il/elle se sent · nous nous sentons · vous vous sentez · ils/elles se sentent

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with je ne me sens pas bien.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out se sentir in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
